PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India’s scheme to help households install rooftop solar with a central financial assistance (subsidy). For Jaipur homes with good sunshine almost all year, a rooftop system can cut monthly electricity bills substantially. This guide explains how the scheme works and the steps to follow.
Who can apply
- An Indian household with its own roof suitable for solar panels
- A valid electricity connection in the applicant’s name (in Jaipur, usually with JVVNL)
- The household should not have availed any other subsidy for rooftop solar
How the subsidy is structured
At the time the scheme was launched, central assistance for residential systems was set at ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the additional third kW, capped at ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. Group housing societies and RWAs can get support for common facilities. Subsidy amounts and rules can be revised, so always confirm current figures on the official portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) before you decide.
Choosing the right system size
System size should match your consumption, not just the subsidy cap. As a broad guide:
- Up to about 150 units per month: 1–2 kW
- About 150–300 units per month: 2–3 kW
- Above 300 units per month: 3 kW or more
Roof area, shadow from water tanks or nearby buildings, and the sanctioned load on your connection also matter. A site survey gives the exact answer.

Step-by-step application process
- Register on the national portal with your state, DISCOM and consumer number.
- Apply for rooftop solar and wait for the DISCOM’s feasibility approval.
- Select a vendor registered with your DISCOM and get the system installed.
- Submit plant details and apply for the net meter.
- After net meter installation and inspection, the commissioning certificate is generated.
- Submit bank details; the subsidy is credited to your account.
Tips before you sign
- Ask for module and inverter make, warranty terms and structure design in writing
- Confirm who handles DISCOM paperwork and net metering
- Understand annual cleaning and maintenance needs
- Plan for low-cost financing if paying upfront is difficult
