For factories and warehouses, electricity is often one of the largest operating costs. Industrial tariffs in Rajasthan, combined with high solar irradiation, make rooftop solar a strong option for many units. But a good industrial project needs careful planning — here is a practical checklist.
1. Understand your load profile
Collect 12 months of electricity bills and, if possible, hourly or shift-wise consumption. Daytime-heavy loads benefit most from solar because most generation is used directly. Note your sanctioned load and contract demand.
2. Audit the roof and structure
- Usable shadow-free area and roof orientation
- Roof type — RCC, metal sheet or asbestos — and its remaining life
- Structural capacity to carry modules, mounting and wind loads
- Safe access for cleaning and maintenance
3. Choose the business model
CAPEX: you own the plant, get full savings and may claim accelerated depreciation as per tax rules. OPEX/RESCO: a developer invests and you pay a per-unit tariff, with no upfront cost. Compare both on a lifetime cost basis.

4. Regulations, approvals and metering
Rooftop systems connected to the grid must follow the state regulator’s rules and the DISCOM’s procedures for connectivity and metering (net metering or other arrangements, depending on category and capacity). Electrical safety approvals may be needed depending on system size. Rules change from time to time, so verify the current regulations with the DISCOM before finalising capacity.
5. Engineering and quality
- Shadow analysis and energy yield estimate
- Quality modules and inverters with clear warranties
- Proper earthing, lightning protection and cable sizing
- Remote monitoring for generation tracking
6. Operations and maintenance
Dust is a major factor in Rajasthan. Plan a cleaning schedule, periodic inspections and a response time for faults in the O&M contract.
